National Stone Centre

The National Stone Centre was founded in 1983 to advance public information in the formation and use of stone, quarrying history, quarry development and modern practices, and related environmental and conservation issues. It operates a national museum and exhibition centre at Wirksworth, Derbyshire. The centre has an unrivalled library of printed works and reports relating to the stone industries, and a good collection of quarry company reports, brochures, leaflets, etc. It has runs of journals relating to quarrying, mining, geology and allied subjects. These include the Quarry Managers' Journal (now Quarry Management), 1937 to date, Cement, Lime & Gravel, 1930-74, and Mine & Quarry Engineer, 1938-71. Its collections are open to the public by appointment. The centre undertakes research projects on the history and environmental impact of quarrying, preparation of display material, etc.
