Photographs

Old photographs are one of the most rewarding sources for quarry history. They can provide evidence of methods of working, and show the workforce, trains, lorries, ships, etc. Even if they are not dated, it should be possible to give an approximate date by comparison with the Ordnance Survey maps. Local record offices, libraries and museums may all hold collections of old photographs, and many are still in private hands. The British Geological Survey holds a particularly fine collection of quarry photographs.
