Record Offices

Many of the quarrying records described on this page will be located in the network of local authority record offices, established throughout the United Kingdom. Relevant sources in the Public Record Office, which holds the records of central government, are described below. In Scotland there are also the National Archives for Scotland (the former Scottish Record Office) and National Library of Scotland; in Wales, the National Library of Wales. In Northern Ireland, the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland holds the records of the Northern Ireland government, and also acts as a record office for the six counties of the province.

Details of all these repositories, and how to contact them, may be found on ARCHON on the Historical Manuscripts Commission website. All hold records for reference only, not for loan, and most operate a reader's ticket system, for which some form of identification is needed.
