What are the benefits of membership?
There are many benefits of membership, some tangible, and others intangible, including;
- Technical, commercial and legal information
- Demonstration of competence and professionalism
- Legal Defence Cost Insurance Scheme
- Networking, friendship and camaraderie
A major benefit is the opportunity to maintain and enhance your knowledge by means of attending regular local meetings of Branches of The Institute, the annual conference, seminars upon topical issues and reading the monthly journal, Quarry Management, which is included in the subscription.
In response to the increasing need of members to demonstrate competence to employers, customers and, especially, regulators, The Institute has introduced a scheme for members to record continuing professional development (CPD) and to help members plan job related training. In 2005, the Health & Safety Executive stated that he expected all those employees with responsibility for health and safety to be undertaking CPD.
All members receive a hand-scripted membership certificate and those in the corporate grades have the right to use designatory letters after their name; FIQ or MIQ as Fellow or Member respectively, which signifies their status within The Institute. This form of recognition can only be gained through a combination of qualifications, reponsibility and practical experience and has come to represent a benchmark of achievement in the industry.
At a time when litigation is becoming more common, members are automatically covered by the Legal Defence Cost insurance scheme for the cost of defending themselves against prosecution under provisions of Acts such as Health & Safety at Work etc, Racial Relations, Sex Discrimination and Data Protection.
Finally, perhaps the most valuable benefit of all is the reward associated with the friendship and camaraderie that comes from being able to meet informally and exhange ideas and experiences with like-minded people at local, national and international levels.
