Higher apprenticeship in mineral products technology

Combines vocational qualifications with a higher education certificate

Aimed at 18+ year olds who want a career in the extractive industry.  Anyone wanting to study this apprenticeship must have two A-levels at A to C or equivalent and be employed by a company.  Once the apprenticeship is completed, learners will have the following qualifications:

  • Mineral Products Qualifications Council (MPQC) Safety, Health and Environment QCF Level 4 vocational qualification; and
  • Higher National Certificate (HNC) undertaken through the University of Derby

The apprenticeship is a two year programme starting in September each year.  In the first year apprentices cover general topics and in the second year choose a specific industry pathway to follow such as extractives, asphalt, cement, concrete and clay.

Year One

  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills
  • Introduction to Mineral Products Technology

Year Two

  • First Line Supervisory Management
  • Work Based Study
  • Technical Module (choose specialised option)

Once you complete your apprenticeship, you can go on to study for a full Honours Degree in Minerals Management.
