The Scottish Branch continued its 2016-17 technical evening calendar on Tuesday 8th November, a joint event with the IAT held at Stirling Court Hotel.

The presentation entitled “Recycled Aggregates and Structural materials for reinstatement (SMR)” was given by David Ross from Scottish Water Horizons.

The evening was well supported by 38 members and guests both at the venue and also via webinar locations.

The 6 year programme involving councils in Scotland, includes 13 tier contractors and 58 local contractors as part rural framework for high quality reinstatement.

Key drivers are:

  • Reducing waste
  • Reduce carbon footprint
  • Minimising disruption
  • Cost and time efficiencies

SMR’s with recycled aggregates uses the trench arising’s that have been uplifted, taken to a depot, rescreened and then reprocessed with the introduction of a cementitious binder. This material then goes back to site to be used as the structural base layers of the trench reconstruction.

The designs have been approved under SHW and is subject to robust quality control and testing regimes.

The product benefits are:

  • Improved compressive strength performance
  • Fast curing times
  • Reduced use of primary aggregates
  • Cost efficiencies

The business benefits:

  • Landfill diversion / increased recycling rates
  • Reduction in vehicle movements
  • Meets government targets for zero to landfill

The challenges of the scheme and product were around misconceptions, apathy, fear of change and old habits.

A vote of thanks was given by IAT branch secretary Craig McQueen and thanks was duly given from the floor in the normal manner.
