Grade Structure
The membership structure of The Institute was simplified in 1999 to provide a relatively straightforward progression as a member acquires either experience or qualifications or both. The grade of Associate Member was amalgamated with Member and that of Affiliate with Associate.
There are now only four grades; the corporate grades of Member and Fellow and non-corporate grades of Student and Associate. Corporate members may vote at the Annual General Meeting and thereby affect the objectives, policy and constitution of The Institute. They may also use the designatory letters MIQ and FIQ respectively.
In order of natural progression, the grades can be defined as follows;
Student
The Student grade is appropriate for persons engaged in a recognised course of study or training relating to the industry.
Associate
Associate is the standard grade for members who have passed the University of Derby Diploma in Quarry Technology, or holds an exempting qualification.
OR
An Associate must have obtained an approved technical or administrative qualification.
OR
An Associate must have completed one years' experience in the industry.
Member
The grade of Member requires that you must be employed in the industry.
OR
A Member must have passed the Diploma in Quarry Technology from the University of Derby or possess a qualifying exempting qualification.
OR
A Member must have completed a period of training and have experience in the industry, of which not less than three years was in a position of responsible charge.
Fellow
The grade of Fellow requires that you must be employed in the industry.
OR
A Fellow must have met the Membership requirements (see above).
OR
A Fellow must have at least seven years' experience in the industry, including four years in the position of senior managerial charge.
Notwithstanding the above progression, a new applicant may apply for any grade.
