Nordberg Travelling Scholarship Rules

The Nordberg Travelling Scholarship is financed from an endowment fund established by a gift from the UK branch of the Nordberg Company. The recipient is selected by competition and the value of the Scholarship is £1,500 to £2,000 and is normally awarded every three years.

The award is administered by the Institute of Quarrying, the Council having elected that the Education Committee, or sub-committee thereof, together with the Director of the Institute and a representative of the donor company, shall constitute the award committee.

Rules

  1. The award is made on the basis of merit and is open to Students, Associates and Members of the Institute normally resident in the UK who shall, on the first day of January of the year in which the award is made, be over 21 and under 30 years of age.
  2. Forms of application are available on request from the Secretary of the Institute.
  3. Every applicant is required to be sponsored by three Fellows of the Institute and to be recommended by his/her employer.
  4. Applicants will be required to submit an outline programme of study and to produce evidence of academic qualifications and/or examination passes.
  5. The Award Committee will have, among other considerations, regard for:
    • Age of applicant
    • Educational standards achieved
    • Academic or other qualifications
    • Educational ambitions
    • In-post experience
    • Recommendations of sponsors
  6. All applicants will be considered by the Award Committee who may elect to interview any or all of the applicants. Every applicant will be advised in writing of the decision of the Award Committee, which decision is final.
  7. The Scholarship recipient will be required to comply with the following conditions and give such undertakings as may be needed:
    • the Scholarship is personal to the recipient, may only be used for the purpose intended and is not transferable
    • the holder of the award is required to implement the Scholarship within 12 months of the date of the award, otherwise the prize monies are forfeited
    • the award holder is to provide, at his/her own cost, all insurance to cover travel risks, accidents and all other contingent liabilities
    • within six months of completion of the Scholarship the holder is to submit a report of 3,000-5,000 words to the Director of the Institute. The copyright will be vested in the Institute and, at the discretion of the editor, the report may be published among the Transactions in Quarry Management
  8. The award is made, and the Scholarship granted, on the understanding that neither the Institute of Quarrying nor the donor company accepts any liability or responsibility arising out of any loss of life or limb, loss of property, third-party claims or consequential claims from the dependent relatives of the award holder.
