Training Course Information

Introduction

Doncaster College has been associated with courses in minerals for many years, originating in the town’s close association with coal mining.  However, from September 2007, the distance learning course (DAPS) has been delivered by the University of Derby.

Degree Course in Quarrying

The degree course in Quarrying and Road Surface Engineering formerly offered by Doncaster College and accredited by the University of Leeds has been discontinued.

This degree course was borne out of an earlier educational provision of a Doncaster Diploma in Quarrying (DDQ) which was later accredited as a Higher National Diploma (HND).

Doncaster Assisted Private Study (DAPS) Course in Quarrying

For 30 years the DAPS course has prepared candidates for the Institute’s Professional Examination through a programme of distance learning which involved students in working through postal assignments, augmented by weekend ‘tutorials’ or short courses held at Doncaster three or four times a year.

The DAPS scheme usually took three years but could be reduced to two years for candidates with suitable qualifications.

Private Study Programme in Construction Materials Testing

A one-year programme of study by distance learning has been available from Doncaster College on quarried materials, concrete technology and on bituminous materials, aimed particularly at laboratory technicians and those engaged in technical sales.

This programme led to the award of an Institute of Quarrying Certificate in Construction Materials Testing.
