1917 First meeting of The Association of Quarry Managers was held in Caernarfon (19 October).
1918 First Annual General Meeting (12 January).
First issue of The Quarry Managers’ Journal (November).
1919 Trade Members Section established.
1920 Name of the association was changed to The Institution of Quarry Managers.
Sir Henry Maybury became the first President.
1921 First Annual Conference was held in London.
1922 First quarry visits organised by IQ made to Mountsorrel and Enderby (Leics).
First meeting of the Executive Council held in Shrewsbury.
1924 Women were admitted to Conferences for the first time.
The Quarry Managers Journal Ltd was formed.
1925 Benevolent Fund established.
Mrs Anne Greaves, the first lady member, was elected.
Institute’s office was moved from Caernarfon to Birmingham.
1926 First award for a technical paper, the Maybury Medal, was presented.
1927 Name changed to The Institute of Quarrying.
Trade Members Section became the Associates’ Section.
1930 Education Committee was established.
1936 Membership Committee was formed.
1937 Committee formed to consider the question of the Institute applying for a Royal Charter (later turned down by Privy Council).
1940 Institute headquarters in Fleet Street, London, were evacuated to Tintagel, Cornwall.
1943 Sub-committee was elected to draft the syllabus for the Institute’s first examination.
1947 Designatory letters (MIQ, FIQ etc) adopted.
1948 First examinations developed by the Institute were set.
First meeting of the Australian branch was held in Sydney.
1955 First of the Short Courses in Quarry Practice held at Ashorne Hill.
1957 The Institute’s founder and General Secretary, Simon McPherson, died at 80 (still in office!) and was succeeded by his son John.
1958 Institute became incorporated as a company limited by guarantee.
Coat of Arms presented as a gift from the outgoing President, Hugh Symington.
Constitution changed to require every applicant for corporate membership to be qualified by examination.
1960 John McPherson died after a long illness.
1961 Brian Fish appointed as Technical Officer.
Australian branch was formed into a Division with branches in NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Queensland.
1967 Diploma course in Quarrying was established at the Doncaster Technical College in South Yorkshire.
1968 New Zealand branch formed.
1969 South African branch formed.
1971 Assisted Private Study course, leading to the Institute’s Associate Membership (now Professional) Examination was started.
1972 Hong Kong branch was formed.
1974 Headquarters moved from London to Nottingham.
First McPherson Memorial Lecture was presented at the Annual Conference.
1978 Membership rules changed to create Honorary Fellow and Associate Member grades.
1980 Citation Award introduced.
1989 First international symposium held in conjunction with Hillhead Quarry Exhibition.
Malaysian branch formed.
1996 Constitution changed to create Affiliated National Institute status.
1997 First formal Business Plan adopted by Council.
Australian Division becomes first Affiliated National Institute.
First meeting of Presidents’ Committee held in New Zealand.
International Citation Award introduced.
Sub-branch of Institute of Quarrying Australia was established in the Philippines.
1999 Membership structure simplified to Student, Associate, Member, Fellow and Hon. Fellow.
Associates Section ceases to exist; Supply Industry Committee created.
Institute of Quarrying New Zealand becomes second Affiliated National Institute.
Code of Conduct adopted.
2000 Institute of Quarrying Southern Africa branch is the first Affiliated National Branch.
2002 Institute of Quarrying Malaysia becomes an affiliated National Institute
