QMJ Relationship with Publishers of Other Overseas IQ Journals
- As part of the agreement on Affiliation, QMJ Publishing Ltd has agreed to co-operate with the publishers of Quarry in Australia and other journals officially appointed by future Affiliated Overseas Institutes.
- The objective is to ensure that overseas members can continue to have access to technical articles which historically have been disseminated through Quarry Management, also that UK members can benefit from similar material originated overseas.
- In order to promote a clear understanding of this arrangement and to discourage possible copyright abuse, the solicitors advise that reproduction of previously published material should be subject to an agreed set of rules, to be filed with the Institute’s Constitution.
- As the law of copyright can be complex and difficult to apply (particularly across national boundaries) it was advised that every effort should be made to deal with potential problems through Institute, rather than legal, channels.
- The rules agreed at the Council meeting in June 1996 are as follows:
- Subject to appropriate permissions being granted, the corporate body in the UK and the Overseas Affiliated Bodies shall have common access to all technical papers produced under the auspices of the Institute for publication in official journals.
- Subject to appropriate permission being granted, the use of editorial material originated in-house by staff journalists shall be subject to exchange between official Institute journals, without charge, on a page-for-page basis.
- Under no circumstances shall technical papers or other editorial material be published if the author, or whoever holds the first copyright, withholds permission.
- All editorial material (both Institute and in-house) reproduced under the terms of these rules shall be accompanied by a credit acknowledging either the author and Institute event for which the paper was produced, or the original source (journal) of the article and date of publication.
- In all circumstances, permission shall be granted for publication on a strictly ‘one time only’ basis.
- Each publisher which is party to these rules shall receive monthly copies of all other official Institute journals without charge.
- In the event an infringement of the rules occurs, in the first instance, the responsibility for ensuring effective corrective action takes place rests with the appropriate incorporated Institute.
