Technical Handbooks
Introduction
The Institute’s range of handbooks for use in both college and industry comprises six volumes on different aspects of quarrying. The A5-size publications are fully illustrated and are written in a readable fashion by authors with wide experience of the industry.
The handbooks vary slightly in length so are priced at £25.00 or £35.00 plus postage and packing.
Summary of Books
Crushing and screening
Second edition, 2001, (268 pages) by Ken Rothery and Steve Mellor, explains the fundamental principles of feeding, crushing and screening, describes the range of equipment in use and discusses its application in quarrying. The introductory text written by Steve Mellor has been substantially extended by Ken Rothery using his experience of design, construction and operation of processing plant.
Sand and gravel production
Second edition, 2000 (200 pages) by Andrew Littler. The first edition (1990) has been up-dated by the author and describes modern operations associated with overburden removal, winning the deposit and subsequent processing. Dredging for marine aggregates is also covered.
Sand and gravel planning and restoration
1990 (160 pages) by Andrew Littler, deals with the planning procedure associated with extraction in England and Wales and considers the various after-use options available for sand and gravel sites. Supporting chapters cover product specifications, geological considerations and exploration, as well as giving an insight into royalties, rates and production costs.
Health & Safety Law in Quarries
2002 (283 pages) by Eric Darlow, is a guide to the interpretation of legislation associated with quarries. The book considers the background to safety legislation, the applicable Acts of Parliament, Regulations and ACOPs. It forms an invaluable reference book for quarry managers and health and safety specialists.
The use of explosives in quarrying
1995 (212 pages) by Terry White and Phil Robinson, provides a convenient source of reference for those wishing to gain an understanding of blasting in rock quarries. Geological and geotechnical factors are covered as well as types of explosives and their application. Relevant safety and environmental considerations are also included.
A dictionary of quarrying terms
1992 (192 pages) by Roy Sheppard, covers the whole range of terms associated with the subjects making up the Institute’s Professional Examination: quarry operations, electrical and mechanical engineering, safety and legislation, business management and concrete and bituminous materials technology. Appendices provide useful formulae and statistics relating to the industry.

Asphalt Production
Asphalt Production, 2005 (318 pages) by Ted Jarvis. Chapters in this handbook cover the basic principles of mixing and applications of bituminous materials, the design, erection and operation of asphalt (coating) plant including important aspects of safety and environmental control.
