The first edition of this handbook, 'An Introduction to Crushing and Screening', written by Steve Mellor, has been thoroughly revised by Ken Rothery, a senior engineer who worked for one of the major aggregate producers for many years. Ken has used his experience of designing and commissioning crushing and screening plant to comprehensively review, up-date and extend the introductory text.

Much more information is given upon the performance, capacity and maintenance of crushing and screening equipment and advise is given upon obtaining full utilisation of processing plant and identifying faults. 'Sand and Gravel Production' was first published in 1990 and proved to be the most popular handbook having sold nearly 2000 copies. It was revised and up-dated by Andy Littler, the original author, in 2001. The principal changes related to ripping, wet working by hydraulic excavators, scrubbers and log-washers, bucket wheel classifiers and de-slimers, control of classifiers and filter presses.
In 2007, Stephen Millburn, national production manager with a major operating company, up-dated the cost data, extended the discussion of silt treatment and water recovery and added a chapter on 'manufactured sand'.
