As we pass the 55-year mark since the Aberfan disaster in October 1966, subsequent Health and Safety at Work Act and the Quarries Regulations 1999’ the Derbyshire Branch takes a look at what the industry has learnt, and what to look for on our sites, whether it be tips, lagoons, working faces or stockpiles.
Dr Rob Donnelly, a Geologist and Geotechnical specialist, now retired, spent many years in our industry working to improve the design, operation and management of those geotechnical features within our operations. Has anything changed in terms of legislation, what do the HSE look for, what should we be looking for, what is the difference between assessment and appraisal, who has responsibility? These and many other subjects will be covered in this technical event that serves to remember those who perished in Aberfan in 1966.
