IQ Publishes New Soil Resource for Members

Written by IQ News Update | Oct 9, 2025 8:45:00 AM

The Institute of Quarrying (IQ) is pleased to announce the release of Soil Resource Considerations Part 1: Identification, a new publication now available exclusively to IQ members. Written by Dr R Neil Humphries FIQ, a leading authority on the sustainable recovery and reuse of soils, the guide represents a major step forward in environmental best practice for the mineral extraction industry.

This publication is the first in a three-part series that addresses the full lifecycle of soil resource management: identification, handling, and restoration. It complements IQ’s existing online guidance by focusing on the critical process of identifying soil resources prior to and after development, steps that are essential for successful site restoration and long-term sustainability.

Supporting Professionals Across the Sector
This guide is designed to assist quarry managers, environmental consultants, planners, and regulators. It supports informed decision-making throughout the development lifecycle and serves as the foundation for the Soil Resource and Management Plan (SRMP), a best-practice document increasingly expected by planning authorities.

A Strategic Resource for Sustainable Development
Soils are a finite and fragile component of the Earth’s natural capital. Their proper identification and conservation are essential for restoring land after extraction and for providing  ecosystem services such as food and fibres, water regulation, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration.

The guide offers a simplification of the soil classification framework for the interpretation of soil functions. It also explains how the soil resource data informs broader environmental assessments, including Agricultural Land Classification, Biodiversity Net Gain, and nature recovery schemes.

Investing in Skills and Knowledge
Recognising the shortage of soil expertise in the minerals sector, the publication calls for greater investment in education and professional development. It highlights training opportunities and provides guidance on professional competencies endorsed by the British Society of Soil Science.

A Century of Leadership in Standards
For over 100 years, the Institute of Quarrying has led the way in promoting operational excellence and sustainable practices. The release of Soil Resource Considerations Part 1 reinforces IQ’s commitment to supporting its members with authoritative resources that raise industry standards and enhance environmental stewardship.

IQ members can access a digital version of the publication via the Institute’s website. Parts 2 and 3, covering Soil Handling and Soil Restoration & Aftercare, will follow shortly.
