September signified the halfway point of my presidency. The year so far has been both busy and rewarding, as we continue to strengthen the Institute’s role in supporting our members and the wider industry.
At the IQ’s AGM held on 25th September, members confirmed the appointment of a new Board member, and I am delighted to officially welcome William Hardcastle to the Institute of Quarrying’s (IQ) Board. Governance may sometimes appear a dry subject, but I have always believed it to be one of the most vital responsibilities we hold as members. By actively engaging in governance, we shape the direction of both our Institute and our profession. It is particularly encouraging to see a new generation of members stepping forward to contribute to this important work.
In October I will attend the annual meeting of the International Presidents of IQ. These gatherings serve as a powerful reminder that we are part of a global community, united by a shared commitment to making our profession safer, more efficient, and better equipped to meet the opportunities of a rapidly changing world. I greatly value these sessions as they provide an excellent forum to learn from our sister organisations and explore ways to collaborate more effectively in supporting the sector worldwide.
I am also pleased to see the launch of the first book in our new IQ guidance series: Soil Resource Considerations Part 1: Identification, featured in this month’s magazine. This is the first of three publications that will provide vital guidance on soil management, an increasingly critical area for our industry. The series forms part of our broader work to develop tools and resources that support efficiency and sustainability, with more to come later this year and throughout 2026.
Looking ahead, our annual Fellows Lunch will take place on 7th November. This prestigious event is always a highlight, offering the chance to reconnect with colleagues and friends, while celebrating the achievements of the University of Derby students alongside our partners at the Institute of Asphalt Technology. As with last year, we will also recognise the outstanding contributions of individuals and organisations supporting the Minerals Matter Future Careers initiative, an essential effort to attract and inspire the next generation of talent into our industry.
Our industry is dynamic, resilient, and fundamental to the UK’s economic and social success. As I move into the second half of my presidency, I remain proud to represent the Institute of Quarrying and to continue working alongside our Board, Council, and members to support and promote our sector.
