As I write my final President’s Blog before handing over to Ben Uphill FIQ, it feels appropriate to reflect on the progress made during my presidency and the opportunities now ahead for the Institute of Quarrying.
Throughout my time as President, I have focused on competence, collaboration, professional development and the strength of our members. From Branch events and CPD to the development of standards and qualifications, I have seen first-hand the value of an Institute that connects people, shares knowledge and supports professionalism across the sector.
I am proud of the progress made in championing standards, supporting member development, strengthening collaboration across the industry and reinforcing IQ’s role as both a professional body and a community. This has included work around National Occupational Standards and SHE qualifications, support for Branch engagement and CPD, promotion of student achievement and future talent, and a clear focus on ensuring that people remain at the centre of technological change.
That is why the reopening of the Derbyshire Eco Centre at Middleton-by-Wirksworth is such an important milestone. Secured through the commitment of local people, the Derbyshire Eco Centre CIC and the support of IQ, it represents more than the return of a valued community asset. It marks a major step in the creation of our campus and the development of a centre of excellence for quarrying, mineral products and the extractive industries.
The strength of this opportunity lies in collaboration. Local people have worked with determination to protect the Centre’s future, while the CIC and organisations already based on site bring community purpose, environmental ambition and local knowledge. Together, we have the chance to create a true home for quarrying, where professional development, practical skills, sustainability and community engagement come together.
Our Branch network and upcoming events will be vital in communicating this milestone. They provide the opportunity to engage members, explain the significance of the campus and show how this development can support the future of our profession.
That same sense of professional community will also be celebrated at the Fellows Lunch and Student Awards 2026, which is now available to book. Taking place in November at Symphony Hall, Birmingham, the event returns to the venue for a third year in a row and will once again be held in partnership with the Institute of Asphalt Technology.
I would encourage members and Fellows to secure their places and join us in Birmingham. The event remains an important occasion to recognise achievement, celebrate future talent and bring together colleagues from across the industry.
As I prepare to hand over the presidency to Ben, I do so with confidence in the Institute, its members and its future direction. I wish Ben every success in the role and know that the future of the Institute is in safe hands. It has been a privilege to serve as President and to work with so many people who care deeply about the standards, skills and reputation of our profession.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the Institute of Quarrying for their support during my time in the role. The progress made has only been possible because of the commitment, knowledge and enthusiasm of our membership.
