The next Yorkshire branch technical event will be a presentation by Dr Stephen Foster of S M Foster Associates Limited on 'The effect of open pit mineral extraction on the structure and hydrological characteristics of surrounding strata - implications for quarry design and assessment.' Stress change due to removal of rock at open pit mineral workings results in the development of an excavation disturbed zone (EdZ) that extends into the host rock. Associates change in the properties of bedding, joints and fractures within the disturbed zone has an influence on the structural and hydrological characteristics of surrounding strata with implication for assessment of the potential impact of mineral workings on surface water and groundwater resources. New research indicates that, subject to quarry depth and local geological conditions, the disturbed zone may extend several hundred metres away from the workings. Consequent change in host rock permeability within this zone may influence groundwater flow, dewatering volumes and pollutant migration potential. The presentation will outline the methods and results of the research and discuss the potential implications for quarry design and assessment through the presentation of several case study examples.
