A revised version of the go-to reference handbook Explosives in Quarrying is now available to anyone working in the industry, as well as a new diploma programme in Surface Mining Explosives Engineering.

The third iteration of the Explosives in Quarrying Handbook has been completely overhauled by the Institute of Quarrying (IQ) and blasting specialists EPC Groupe to reflect the most up-to-date industry knowledge required for anyone involved in commercial blasting within the surface extraction environment. The original Explosives in Quarrying Handbook was published in 1995, followed by an update in 2010.

Julian Smallshaw, Head of Education and Standards at the IQ, explains: “With the ever-increasing developments in technology, processes, and health and safety requirements in the mineral products industry, a considerable amount of effort has gone into updating the latest version of the book to include all of the current legislation, changes in surveying techniques, and the integration of geology and slope stability. We especially want to extend our thanks to EPC Groupe for their support in refreshing the content.”

In addition to the reproduction of Explosives in Quarrying, the IQ has launched a Diploma in Surface Mining Explosives Engineering. Working in collaboration with EPC Groupe and the University of Derby, the diploma programme focuses on enhancing professionalism, safety, and competence within the explosives products and services sector.

Ben Williams, EPC-UK Managing Director and Chairperson of the Institute of Quarrying, comments: “The IQ Blasting Diploma is a progressive, industry-led qualification that’s been expertly produced to help up-skill our industry and set an international standard for the explosives sector.

“The revised Explosives in Quarrying Handbook that has also been launched supports the Blasting Diploma and provides our industry with complementary learning material for all the EPC-UK delivered blasting courses. The handbook enables practitioners from all industry disciplines to continuously update their knowledge regarding relevant methods and processes. The book is a working guide for explosive operators and professionals at all levels, including users, supervisors, managers and directors.”

The new qualification set to begin in the new year is predominantly online, which fits perfectly with a busy work schedule and lasts an approximate duration of 12 months. Made up of online assessments and tutorials, it is suitable for anyone working in the explosives products and services sector. IQ is currently taking expressions of interest for the qualification.
