As 2025 unfolds, it is clear that political and economic change continues to shape the global landscape. Our industry plays a vital role in supporting growth across all sectors, providing the essential materials and minerals that underpin everyday life. While uncertainty brings its share of challenges, it is crucial that we remain focused on delivering our products efficiently and effectively. As an Institute with over a century of history, we’ve faced similar periods of change and time and again, we've upheld our mission to support individuals in developing their skills, knowledge, and experience.
As we near the end of another academic year, it has been inspiring to witness the achievements of the latest cohort from the Centre for Mineral Products. Whether through Apprenticeships, Diplomas, Foundation Degrees, or the Honours Programme, the results have been outstanding. These successes reflect the commitment and hard work of our learners, as well as the dedication of the Centre’s team in supporting them.
Earning a qualification is no small feat. It takes determination and commitment. Balancing academic demands with work and home life is especially commendable, and something truly worth celebrating.
As President, I remain committed to the continued development of our qualifications to ensure we nurture the talent our industry needs. Whether we face economic, political, environmental, or technological challenges, investing in passionate, resilient individuals is key to a sustainable future.
Beyond education, our Institute also serves a broader charitable purpose advancing the science and practice of quarrying. Our students contribute significantly through their industry projects, but we are also focused on supporting our wider membership in fulfilling this goal.
One exciting initiative in this space is the Emerald Challenge. Designed to support and recognise IQ members, this annual grant of £5,000 is awarded to a Technical Member (TMIQ), Member (MIQ), or Fellow (FIQ) to help develop a project or research idea that supports their organisation’s journey toward Net Zero Carbon. This initiative, conceived by IQ member Steve Cole Hon FIQ, is a powerful example of our community’s strength and spirit.
Applications are now open for this year’s Emerald Challenge, which includes a streamlined process to encourage broader participation. Past recipients have delivered impactful projects, and I strongly encourage all eligible members to get involved.
Looking ahead, I’m excited to share that I’ll be working on establishing a new International branch of the Institute in the UAE in the coming weeks. This development highlights our continued growth and commitment to supporting the industry globally. I look forward to sharing more updates as the project progresses.
Together, let’s continue to build a resilient, innovative, and globally connected industry.
