The Strategic Safety Forum (SSF) came together at Hillhead 2026, to mark the launch of the revised qualifications that have been integral to competency for the sector for more than 20 years. The SSF core member organisations, consisting of the Mineral Products Qualifications Council (MPQC), the Mineral Products Association (MPA), British Aggregates Association (BAA), Institute of Quarrying (IQ) and Quarries National Joint Advisory Council (QNJAC) and their members have worked to support the development of the qualifications over the last 2 years.
The new, revised, Level 4 Diploma in Managing Health, Safety and the Environment in mineral processing operations has been officially launched and seen its first successful candidate achieve the new qualification.
The new Level 6 qualification being launched in August has been reshaped into a true site management pathway. Unlike before, it does not repeat the SHE contents already covered at Level 4. Instead, it focuses on the wider skills managers need to run safe, efficient, and sustainable operations.
The updated National Occupational Standards for Quarry Managers and Supervisors provide a clear, modern, and industry-agreed framework for competence. They recognise the strength of existing qualifications and experience within the sector, while also supporting ongoing development and continuous improvement. Completion of these qualifications provides an important part of the evidence towards demonstrating competence within the workplace, alongside appropriate experience, knowledge and ongoing professional development.
By adopting and implementing these standards in a clear, consistent and collaborative manner, the industry can strengthen competence, enhance safety performance, and ensure it remains well-positioned for the future.
Martin Riley Chair of the SSF, explains:
“Working collaboratively through the SSF its members have supported the recent updates to the National Occupational Standards giving us a vital opportunity to strengthen competence across the sector. By evolving these qualifications with modern expectations, sharing knowledge and focusing on the areas of greatest risk, we can collectively raise standards for our sector.
